How to Reset Ink Level for Canon MX300

Canon Pixma MX300 is one of the Inkjet multifuction (Print, Scan, Copy, Fax) printer from Canon. Like general case of printer, after filled by ink usually ink level not full. At some cases of printer, after ink level empty, printer cannot be used to print.

Here the Solution to reset the ink level for Canon Pixma MX300, follow this steps to reset the ink level in your canon MX300.
  1. Switch off the Canon MX300 and disconnect the power cable.
  2. While press and hold the power button, Connect the power cable to electric socket.
  3. While pressing the power button, press the “Cancel/Stop” button (red button).
  4. Now release the power button and the printer turns into a kind of factory mode. Wait for 10 seconds until it says “idle”.
  5. Press “>” (next button) once “Shipping Mode 3″ then Press the “OK” button. Press “OK” again for “without cleaning”.
  6. A test page will print.
  7. Open the cover, like you are about to change the cartridges.
  8. Disconnect the power cable again without switch off the printer.
  9. Take out the both cartridges.
  10. Close the cover.
  11. Connect the power cable and turn on the printer.
  12. Now just put the cartridges back and the ink level in the canon Pixma MX300 have full again.

Laser Printer Disadvantages

Laser printers have many useful features but there are very few disadvantages to owning a laser printer. One of them is definitely the cost. The money that you could spend on a very high-end inkjet printer will only buy you a very low-end color laser printer with limited capacities. Color laser printers with multi-functions such as a copier and a fax all in one are even more expensive. However a middle of the line black and white laser printer is comparable to the price of a top of the line color inkjet printer.
The average home computer user definitely does not need a laser printer. Sure laser printer prices have fallen considerably in the last couple of years. But have you look at the cost of laser toner? The average laser toner cartridge sells for over $100. The cost of replacement ink can really ad up on you. Unless you are printing hundreds of pages each day you really don’t need a laser printer. The cartridges for laser printers are several times more expensive then the cost of the toner cartridges for inkjet printers. However they do last longer especially if you remember to set the printer in black and white printing mode when printing black and white and only using the color mode when it is really needed. Another way to make an expensive color laser toner cartridge last longer is to keep the printer in low quality mode unless you are printing out the final document.
If you live in a hot or humid climate a laser printer may not be the ideal solution for you. This is because running these machines can make a room very hot. The fuser inside them, which is the device that melts the plastic granules that constitute the powder that makes up the toner onto the paper, heats up to as high as 200 degrees Celsius.
Laser printers print only on certain kinds of paper. If you want to print out photographs then a laser printer is not for you as they are not yet capable of printing high-resolution images. Also you cannot put photographic paper through a laser printer. For the best quality images you need to buy a bubble jet ink printer that can transfer an image onto photographic paper. The color quality that you get with a bubble jet ink printer is just as good if not better than the color quality that you can obtain with a laser printer. A high-end color printer that produces quality color images can cost as much as $3,500 to $10,000 whereas you can get a good quality ink jet printer for about $200.
Another area of functionality where a color laser printer may disappoint you is in terms of speed. Only the very high end laser printers used by corporations and big companies can print images fast. You can expect the average color laser printer that is sold for personal use to print out about four pages a minute. This might be too slow for businesses that need to speedily print out mailing lists or rough copies of documents for quick perusal.
Laser printers are limited by the amount of memory that they are sold with. This can sometimes limit the number of fonts that you can use. To expand the memory of your color laser printer you usually have to buy a small RAM board. This is the only reliable way to install memory so that the color laser printer can utilize a number of fonts.
The more expensive a laser printer is the faster it is. The affordable models only print out about four pages a minute. Top end models print out about thirty pages a minute but they are not really affordable for the individual.
Another drawback of using a laser printer is that they are usually heavier and larger than the impact or inkjet type printers. However new technology is arriving every year to make the color laser printer a more portable and personal item.

PG 40 and CL 41 canon cartridge reseting

This is as far as I got into the steps you suggested:
1. Disconnect the power cable.
2. Hold down "On/Off" button.
3. Reconnect the power cable.
4...
Holding power and pressing cancel once lights up an orange led next to a lightning symbol, and not much else.

Pressing cancel twice gives "Factory Mode 1", which runs a few rollers, but doesnt say Idle after a good minute or so, and doesnt seem to repond to anything.

Pressing cancel THREE times switches on "Factory Mode 2", which gives the following options:

Asks how many times, options 1 5 10 15 20 endless
Tried 1, seems to run the scanner along once and says complete.

Printer Ink Cartridges Introduction

An ink cartridge is a replaceable component of an ink jet printer that contains the ink (and sometimes the print-head itself) that is spread on paper during printing. Each ink cartridge contains one or more partitioned ink reservoirs; certain manufacturers also add electronic contacts and a chip that communicates with the printer. Before three decades dot matrix printers were used very commonly. They required a ribbon to print characters on the paper.  As technology marches on a new concept of drop on demand technology was invented for the ink printer cartridge. By 1990 this method was accepted by all printer and ink printer cartridge manufacturers. This is the printer technology of choice for the vast majority of consumers today. This printing method is available for black and white and color documents as well as photo printing.

 Printer Cartridge

Printers require specific printer cartridges, which are usually packaged with the printer upon initial purchase. When buying a printer cartridge, choose a type that matches with your printers compatibility. Make sure to refer to the types of cartridges to check what type of cartridge supports. Make sure that you are buying from a trusted retailer, because some are selling poor quality cartridges that can damage your printer. Printers will not function properly without a printer cartridge, which holds the ink that allows the printer to produce copies of documents or images. It is usually installed on a panel in printers and moves in a lateral position over the paper, dispensing ink. Remember following points before puchasins ink cartridges:

a) Avoid generic cartridges. The ink used in these cartridges may damage your printers nozzles.
b) Figure out the printing quality you need. Ink cartridges made by the same manufacturer as the printer will produce the best results. These cartridges are also the most pricey.
c) Take a look at the printer warranty. Some manufacturer’s warranties are void if an ink cartridge is used that is made by a different manufacturer.
d) Look at the page yield of the ink cartridge you are buying. This will tell you how much printing the cartridge will do.

Branded toner cartridges are ideal to use because they are of high quality and are still affordable. They are original and are designed by the printer manufacture. A specific branded printer functions with their compatible cartridges. The ink cartridge is housed in a plastic container and is available in different colors. Ink cartridges are available in a single, four color cartridge that already includes black, a tricolor cartridge that has three of the major colors used to mix together to form other shades, and a separate blank ink cartridge.

Open Prepress Interface

protocol developed by Aldus Corporation used in electronic prepress to link desktop publishing systems and high-end CEPS. Essentially, high-resolution color images are stored on a central network server, to which all the workstations are connected. Low-resolution files are sent by the server to individual computers working on page layout. The low-res images are imported into the page (in a kind of FPO way), positioned, and comments sent back to the OPI server provide specific cropping, scaling, positioning, and color information about the image. The servers PostScript driver inserts the proper instructions into the PostScript code. When the page is ultimately output to an imagesetter connected to the network, the high-resolution image is swapped for the low-res one, and the indicated instructions as to cropping, etc., are executed.
The work with layout documents which include big graphic files (high resolution, big size) may become a test for someone’s patience due to the rate of the processing. The dealing with this kind of files, which need a lot of memory in the workflow, can be simplified with an Open Prepress Interface (OPI) System. Although the PCs and networks become constantly faster and powerful, OPI is used for the Prepress workflow in order to minimize the waiting period. It is in use for 10 years now, but only a few people know this application.

OPI- principle

If a graphic file is placed into a document, layout applications normally integrate the whole graphic file. If the graphic files are big, the processing of the document becomes very slow due to the quantity of the graphic data. The resources needed by the PC and the network (if used) are unnecessary; because low resolution graphic files are sufficient for the work on a monitor in order to create the layout or to judge the colors.

Because of this, OPI-programs create low-resolution graphic files with the same dimensions and place them into the layout document instead of the originals. The high-resolution files are integrated by an OPI-server just after the print job is started. The OPI-server finds the data by so called OPI-comments, which are included in the PostScript print file or in a PDF file. These OPI-comments describe, among other things, the memory needed, the sizes, and the position of the graphics in the layout document. Another aspect is the possibility to share the work of one project between the graphics and the layout, because the final graphics are embedded after the print job is started.

Therefore, the output files include only references to the original high-resolution graphic files in order to save resources of the PC and the network. The big advantage is that the resources which are needed of the computer for the layout document are moved from the PC to the server. This saves time and costs. If there is a powerful OPI-server, the print job is speeded up, too.

Emulator means someone who copies the words or behavior of another Synonyms. In computer sciences hardware, software or a combination of the two that enables a computer to act like another computer and run applications written for that computer is called emulator. In the past, it was often a hardware add-on that actually contained an instruction execution module for the emulated computer. Today, "emulator" more often refers to software, which provides a translation layer from the emulated computer to the computer it is running in. understand printer emulation, remember that a printer receives commands from the computer. These commands are in a specific printing language. Many manufacturers have developed printing languages but some of them have become industry standards. To meet the industry requirement manufacturers try to make their printers compatible with these de facto standards. PCL and Postscript are most popular languages and have become a standard, other manufacturers equip their printer according to the specifications of these languages. For example, while PCL was developed by Hewlett–Packard, it was widely copied by other manufacturers who offer emulations of HP printer. By the emulation of a HP printer another printer is able to understand PCL. If you are using an emulated printer, you may find “Laser Jet IIp compatible” or “PCL5 compatible” etc on it.
The term emulation especially applies to PostScript printers because Adobe itself does not produce printers and each PostScript printer produced by any manufacturer emulates PostScript. The term emulation also applies to printers that do not emulate the printer or the printing language of another manufacturer but that emulate another type of devices. For example some Laser printers have the ability to emulate other graphic output devices such as pen plotters. These printer emulate HP GL language which is used by pen plotters. In some graphic applications a plotter can take 30 minutes to print a complex drawing, while the draft output is produced from a laser printer in a few seconds. It is possible for designers to print a sample on laser printers and after finalizing the drawing it can be printed on plotter.
Adobe does not sell printers but it sells Postscript license to the manufacturers. Before Postscript Level 2, the license fees charged by Adobe were high, so some manufacturers tried to emulate the PostScript language. But nowadays license fees has been reduced and manufacturers prefer to use Postscript instead of emulated languages.

Panasonic Error

Epson 2200 error

Got the maintance manual and tried to locate the problem. What is happening is:

1 Turn on printer and it feeds a sheet of paper.
2 Paper goes by PW sensor and stops (too far in). Does not move paper back to the correct positon. Tried it on ADF and manual and same thing happens.

3 All ink lights start flashing.
I think it is the paper detector but there is nothing in the maintenance manual that I can find to fix the problem.
Spent a small fortune on this printer, ink and archival paper and would like to get it working again, if possible.
I have talked to Epson (thats a laugh) and Dawn Electronis several times and basically was told that for an additional $175 they would work on it (additional service charge).
I fell that I have been really ripped off.
If it can not be fixed, I just wasted $3,000 and it is going into the trash.
Would never recommend Epson printers again.

Data Protection by Encryption

Encryption is a method to protect data against unauthorized access. Actually, encryption protects data that might be accessed, for example, in an IT environment by sniffing. By applying encryption methods to data, that data is turned into a form that is not easy to interpret without the decryption key. To turn encrypted data back into the original form you need to apply the appropriate decryption method. Thus, unauthorized persons may obtain encrypted data, but if they do not know the appropriate decryption method, they cannot access and use the original data. Of course, authorized persons must be the only persons who have access to the required decryption method.

Almost all encryption methods use a special parameter, the so-called key. To decrypt an encrypted message, you need to know which encryption method was used (or which corresponding decryption method is to be used) and additionally you need to know the correct key to make decryption work correctly. With modern encryption methods, the key is usually a character string of a defined length. For example, encryption methods may use 44-bit keys, 56-bit keys, 128-bit keys or even longer keys. The length of the key affects the security level of an encryption method. The most simple, but also a very time consuming way to crack a key is to try out each possible combination of characters. This method is called “brute force attack”. The longer the key, the more possible combinations you have to try out. That is why short keys are cracked more quickly than long keys. To reduce the time required to crack a key, some programs use a dictionary because most users build their keys or passwords from real words. But the design of an encryption method also plays an important role and some methods with shorter keys are harder to crack than other methods using longer keys. As computers become more and more powerful, the time required to try out a number of different combinations decreases and approved encryption methods become obsolete after some time. Basically, there are two kinds of encryption methods,

symmetric encryption methods and

asymmetric encryptions methods.

With symmetric encryption methods, the sender encrypts his message or data with the same key the receiver uses to decrypt the data. The problem with symmetric encryption methods is that the sender not only has to transfer the encrypted data to the receiver, but also the key which is required to decrypt the data. The transmission of the key from the sender to the receiver requires additional security measures.

With asymmetric encryption methods, two kinds of keys are used, one for the encryption of data and one for the decryption of data. Asymmetric encryption methods use a public key and a secret key, called the private key. Both keys are related to each other as the private key is used to generate the public key (but it is not possible to identify the private key if you just know the public key). Each participant of encrypted communication needs to have a public key and a private key. A participant publishes his public key and anyone who wants to send this participant encrypted data uses the public key of the participant to encrypt the data. The private key is kept by the participant and he uses it to decrypt arriving data. Compared to symmetric encryption methods, the advantage of asymmetric methods is that participants do not have to interchange secret keys to make communication work. With symmetric methods, the distribution of secret keys always requires additional security measures, because communication is no longer protected if the secret key is known by unauthorized persons. The public key of asymmetric methods is only used to encrypt data, but you cannot decrypt data with a public key. Thus the public key can be known by anyone and the distribution of public keys among the participants of a protected communication does not require any security measures.

Resetting the Hewlett Packard C5010A

To turn the ink level gauge off for the HP C5010A (#14) color cartridge used in the OfficeJet D Series:
1. Refill your cartridge using your Mr. Ink Jet refill kit.
2. Press the < and > (also the + and -) at the same time, then release quickly (the lcd panel must be showing the date or the procedure will not work)

3. On the keypad, press in order 4,5, 6.
4. A message will appear asking if you want to override the ink level gauge. Press 1 for yes (You can later turn the ink gauge back on if you install a new cartridge by going through steps 2 and 3, then pressing 2 when prompted if you want to override the ink level gauge).
Your ink level gauge is now turned off and can resume printing.

To turn the ink level gauge off for the HP C5010A (#14) color cartridge used in the HP Color InkJet CP 1160 Series:

What is The Secure Socket Layer SSL

The Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol provides a framework for passing information through an authenticated and encrypted tunnel. Each SSL connection defines a point-to-point tunnel between a client and a server. The SSL protocol operates within the presentation layer and allows the client and server to negotiate authentication, encryption, and checksum algorithms.
The SSL protocol was originally developed by Netscape. Version 1.0 was never publicly released; version 2.0 was released in February 1995 but "contained a number of security flaws which ultimately led to the design of SSL version 3.0", which was released in 1996 (Rescorla 2001). This later served as the basis for TLS version 1.0, an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard protocol first defined in RFC 2246 in January 1999. Visa, MasterCard, American Express and many leading financial institutions have endorsed SSL for commerce over the Internet. SSL operates in modular fashion. It is extensible by design, with support for forward and backward compatibility and negotiation between peers. SSL, by itself, is a system for negotiating protocols. SSL does not provide security nor natively include cryptography; there is no security from SSL by itself. The security in SSL comes from the negotiated protocols. For example, the client may support DES, 3DES, and AES encryption, whereas the server supports 3DES and RC2. Using SSL, both systems can negotiate communication using their common 3DES encryption algorithm. A variety of authentication, encryption, and checksum functions may be incorporated into SSL. SSL is used to tunnel plaintext data through an encrypted tunnel. SSL v2 is flawed in a variety of ways:
* Identical cryptographic keys are used for message authentication and encryption.
* MACs are unnecessarily weakened in the "export mode" required by U.S. export restrictions (symmetric key length was limited to 40 bits in Netscape and Internet Explorer).
* SSL v2 has a weak MAC construction and relies solely on the MD5 hash function.
* SSL v2 does not have any protection for the handshake, meaning a man-in-the-middle downgrade attack can go undetected.
* SSL v2 uses the TCP connection close to indicate the end of data. This means that truncation attacks are possible: the attacker simply forges a TCP FIN, leaving the recipient unaware of an illegitimate end of data message (SSL v3 fixes this problem by having an explicit closure alert).
* SSL v2 assumes a single service, and a fixed domain certificate, which clashes with the standard feature of virtual hosting in webservers. This means that most websites are practically impaired from using SSL. TLS/SNI fixes this but is not deployed in webservers as yet.

E000 on Canon IR220 2800 3300

E000 is temperature low indication. It means that the reading of the main thermistor does not reach 30C within 1 second after the main switch is turned on. Or, it does not reach 70C 2 seconds thereafter. Before you start to check the defective parts, make sure that the line power source is stable and meets the machine power ratings. If it sounds good, first thing to check is the fixing film. A thermistor is used to detect the temperature of the fixing film, faulty thermistor sends wrong signal to the control board and may cause E000. Check the interval between pin 1 and between pin 4 of the connector (4-pin) of the thermistor for electrical continuity. If is few ohm, the thermistor has a short circuit. Canon recommends replacing the whole fixing film in this case. Second reason of E000 is open fixing heater circuit. Check continuity between heater terminals, if it is open replace it. Rarely, faulty power supply PCB or the DC controller PCB also result in E000. I never tried to repair a Controller Board but in most cases power supply can be repaired by a professional.

Paper jamming problems are very typical. Most paper jams are caused by one or more paper characteristics. 
When you have paper jamming problems, first of all check the paper feed tray from which the paper was fed. The following jams, organized by area of the machine, may be related to paper. Some common reasons of jamming caused by paper are following:
Paper Curl:
The paper’s moisture content is controlled during the manufacturing process. If the paper moisture changes between shipping points and points of consumption, due to poor storage of paper such as by open windows in low temperatures or in non-humidity controlled storerooms, the condition of paper fiber is changed. A curl will result due to this imbalance of humidity moisture between the front and backsides of the paper. Heavier paper, and one side coated papers are particularly susceptible to curling. Proper paper storage is very important in preventing curling problems. Even when sheet of paper is flat, if it contains high amounts of moisture, it may cause a curl problem after passing through the fuser section of printer or photocopier.
The grain of the paper:
The grain of the paper refers to the direction of the fibers in a sheet of paper. The grain direction results from how the paper fibers lie parallel with one another during the paper manufacturing process in the direction they ran in respect to the wire belt. This grain direction effects how the paper will curl. For best copier/printer performance, the grain direction should be parallel to the long side of the sheet. Long-grain papers are about twice as stiff in the long direction. Short-grain papers are about twice as stiff in the short direction.
Paper Moisture:
The papers moisture content is tied directly to its dimensional stability and strength. Too much moisture causes excessive curl, jams, and print quality problems. If the paper’s moisture content is too low static problems may result, which can also create to jams and misfeeds as well as cause image quality problems. The best performance in Electrographic printing systems comes with papers that have nominal moisture content of 4.5 ± 0.5 %. Usually, the paper for copiers/printers is manufactured to have the aforementioned moisture content. Moisture content can be affected by the environmental conditions of packaging and storage. The paper ream should be packaged to ensure moisture integrity. Moisture-proof ream wrappers are essential to maintaining the correct moisture level. If the paper is moved from a storage area to a location with a different temperature and humidity, the paper should be conditioned to the new location before it is used.
Fanning:
Fanning a new opened ream of paper is extremely important and should be performed each time paper is loaded. Fanning the paper allows the paper to feed better due to less surface friction between the sheets and it helps remove any paper lint before being placed in the machine.
Fanning is especially important when using paper that has been pre-drilled. Fanning the paper is a little step that, when done properly, can reduce or eliminate paper misfeeds and help to keep the machine free of dust and other paper debris.

How to Clean Scanner Mirrors in HP3330

This is not an Hewlett Packard document, the author does not work for Hewlett Packard and is not responsible for any damage you do to your printer. This procedure is for skilled repair technicians and is not recommended without some knowledge of equipment repair. Proceed at your own risk.

1. Open the document feeder and pull up on the two black tabs on the left and right.
2. Pull up on the right part of the doc feeder then the left, remove doc feeder, set aside.
3. Open front door and rear fuser door.
4. Remove screws closest to teal colored fuser release levers. (side cover screws)
5. Pull right cover out from back while releasing clip on bottom of cover, pull cover towards the back and remove.
6. Push on indentation at back of left cover and pull out at back, this cover is hinged.
7. Remove four screws now visible at base of scanner assy., two on left two on right.
8. Slide covers towards back and remove.
9. Remove two screws in the back just above the fuser and just below the scanner assy. base. Remove two screws in the front, visible now after removing the scanner assy. base covers on the right and left (the left one is just behind the hinged cover near the top hinge.)
10. Remove flat ribbon cable (on left side) at either connection point to disconnect scanner assy. from print engine.
11. Entire scanner assembly can now be slid forward and removed.
12. Close the front, rear and left side doors on the print engine portion and set it aside.
13. Grab front panel face plate at top and pull forward and remove. (or pry gently at top of face plate).
14. At top of exposed front panel you will see four slots in the scanner assy. At the third one from the left there is a latch (dark grey plastic). Push down on the latch with a screwdriver and slide the whole panel assy. to the right. Lift up and out making sure to disconnect the cable.
15. Remove the three screws in the now exposed dark grey front panel cradle and cover, remove the two cables connecting the cover to the main board, pry gently at the top outer corners of the cover and pull it forward and down, remove the cover.
16. Now remove the four scanner assy. screws (one and the center front, center back, center right, center left) all are facing down under the assy. (Or just flip it upside down and remove the four visible screws.
17. Turn the unit back upright and remove the four screws at the back/top (two of them are down inside where the doc feeder normally goes.) Remove the top scanner cover.
18. DANGER your about to work on the scanner carriage itself there is a really good chance that you could break it or the mirrors or bulb so proceed at your own risk.
19. At the top and bottom left side of the black cover enclosing the mirrors are two slots, if you put a small screwdriver in the slots and push gently to the right and lift that side of the cover it should come loose. Then open it to the right and remove it from the right slots.
20. Remove the black screw at the front of the assy., Disconnect the white wires from the CCD board and out of the harness, lift the clear plastic bulb holder out with the bulb then remove it from the rear. (it’s a tight fit at the front.)
21. The top mirror is held in by some really tight clips they have to be removed from the bottom right (clean the mirrors without this step if possible). NOTE: optical mirrors are not like a bathroom mirror, there is no glass covering the reflective surface. The back side of the mirror has glass covering it so if you get it in backwards it won’t work. (The way to tell which side you have is touch your screwdriver to the mirror and if it’s the right side the screwdriver will appear to touch the reflection of the screwdriver, if it’s the wrong side the screwdriver will not touch the reflection of the screwdriver because of the glass covering the reflective surface.
22. Now clean the remaining mirrors and lens very thoroughly with alcohol. Make sure they are very clean. You can put the top mirror back and clean it in place to make cleaning it easier.
23. When re-assembling the top cover check to make sure the white strip on the right side is clean.
24. Reverse procedure for re-assembly.

Linux Printer Installation

You can use a variety of tools to administer printers in CUPS. Some are special to your distribution, some are free and some are commercial. We tested CUPS mostly on a PC running SuSE Linux.We cannot say much about the use of CUPS with any other Linux distribution like RedHat or Linux Mandrake, but it should be very similar on any other system.

Two ways on how to install a printer are shown in the following:

1. a GUI based installation (using the ESP web interface)

2. an installation with command line tools

GUI based installation example

AS mentioned before, the ESP web interface is included in any CUPS version. You can use it for printer administration and job management. To show this example, we used the web interface provided by CUPS. It is accessible via Port 631, the standard port for IPP and CUPS. It is no problem if you have CUPS and other servers on the same machine while using this port.
1. Just type the following URL:
http://localhost:631
if you are working locally on your server
http://[server-name]:631
This procedure will lead you to the starting page of the web
interface.  Choose "Manage Printers" here to get to the printer overview.This screen shows you all printers installed on your system and their current status. Printers marked green are ready to print, printers marked red with an open tray are stopped. In that case you have to check whether there is a problem 
2. In order to install a new one, choose "Add Printer" here.
3. Then you have to give a name to your new printer.

4. In this step you have to choose the type of connection that you are using for the printer you like to install. Possible settings you can choose are:
• Disk File
• App Socket /HP Jet Direct
• Internet printing protocol
• LPR/LPD Host or printer
• Parallel or serial ports

5. Now you have to put in a valid IP-address and a remote queue name for your printer.

6. Now choose your manufacturer. All the manufacturer names offered in this list and the model
names offered in the list in Step 7 are generated by CUPS while using the PPD files stored in 

/usr/share/cups/model/[name of manufacturer]
If your printer does not appear in this list, please make sure that there is a PPD file for it in this location. If it is not, get one and just copy it to this location.

7. Now you have to choose a printer. If your printer does not appear in the list you have to install a PPD file on your system. To install a PPD you have to copy it to
/usr/share/cups/model/[konicaminolta]
and restart your CUPS server with the commands
Linux: # /etc/init.d/cups restart
or
Linux: # rccups restart
The last one does not work on every system, but in SuSE Linux it does. You need to be logged in as root to do that (or use the “Speruser” command SU).

UNIX and Linux

The development of UNIX began in 1969 by the MULTICS developer Ken Thompson. He tried to create an easy-to-use operating system for mainframe computers without the typical batch operation. In the times before UNIX, most of the operating systems were batch operating systems. This means that you had to “write” the application that you want to run on a computer onto a punched card or onto a batch of punched cards. The result was usually printed out. If there was an error, you had to replace or change one or more of the punched cards and start over again. This system was lengthy and expensive so people wanted a system were more people can work in dialogue with the computer. The first step in this direction was the operating system called “MULTICS”. However, MULTICS was hard to handle and still batch operated.
The first version of UNIX was written in the programming language Assembler. Assembler is a programming language that is close to the computer platform on which it is installed. To provide 
independence of the computer platform, the UNIX was re-written in “C”. “C” is a programming language that was developed in 1971 by
Dennis Ritchie. 
In 1974, UNIX was described for the first time. At this time, it had multi-user and multi-tasking capabilities. Every user had his own “home directory” with his files; no user could access files of other users. That was elementary for a multi-user operating system. Multi- user operating systems were needed urgently because many people had to share one mainframe computer. Ken Thompson developed the UNIX system for his employer, the Bell Laboratories. Bell Laboratories is a 100% subsidiary company of AT&T. The Bell Laboratories gave the documentation for UNIX and the source code for nearly the cost price to universities. Besides,
AT&T was doomed in an Antitrust-procedure in 1956 to give away licenses on all his patents. Therefore, many different UNIX systems came into being. These systems are all UNIX-systems but differ in details.
Historically, Linux distributions have mainly been used as server operating systems, and have risen to prominence in that area; Netcraft reported in September 2006 that eight of the ten most reliable internet hosting companies ran Linux distributions on their web servers. (As of June 2008, Linux distributions represented five of ten, FreeBSD three of ten, and Microsoft two of ten. This is due to its relative stability and long uptime, and the fact that desktop software with a graphical user interface for servers is often unneeded. Enterprise and non-enterprise Linux distributions may be found running on servers. Linux distributions are the cornerstone of the LAMP server-software combination (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl/PHP/Python) which has achieved popularity among developers, and which is one of the more common platforms for website hosting. Linux distributions are commonly used as operating systems for supercomputers. As of August 2008, out of the top 500 systems, 423 (84.6%) run a Linux distribution. Nevertheless, the use of the different UNIX-systems was restricted by licenses and rules, made by the manufacturers. Besides, UNIX programs were given away only in binary code that is (nearly) unreadable for humans.

How Encryption Works

The encryption process involves taking each character of data and comparing it against a key. For example, you could encrypt the following string of data in any number of ways:
The quick brown fox
For sample purposes, let’s use a simple letter-number method. In this method, each letter in the alphabet corresponds to a particular number. (You may have used this method as a kid when you got a decoder wheel in your Cracker Jack or breakfast cereal box.) If you use a straight alphabetic-to-number encryption (for example, A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on), the data translates into the following:

You can then transmit this series of numbers over a network, and the receiver can decrypt the
string using the same key in reverse. From left to right, the number 20 translates to the letter T, 8 to H, 5 to E, and so on. Eventually, the receiver gets the entire message:

Most encryption methods use much more complex formulas and methods. Our sample key was about 8 bits long; some keys are extremely complex and can be a maximum of 128 bits long. The larger the key (in bits), the more complex the encryption—and the more difficult it is to crack.
Encryption Keys
To encode a message and decode an encrypted message, you need the proper encryption key or
keys. The encryption key is the table or formula that defines which character in the data trans-
lates to which encoded character. Encryption keys fall into two categories: public and private.
Let’s look at how these two types of encryption keys are used.
Private Key Encryption
Private keys are known as symmetrical keys. In private key encryption technology, both the
sender and receiver have the same key and use it to encrypt and decrypt all messages. This makes it difficult to initiate communication the first time. How do you securely transmit the single key to each user? You use public keys, which we’ll discuss shortly.
